When the opportunity came up for designing a custom rug, I could hardly wait. The possibilities were endless. After a crash course by Landry & Arcari on the process of making Tibetan rugs the ideas started to pour into my mind. It was one of the most enjoyable design projects I've worked on, and at ONY architecture we'll find any opportunity to custom design a rug for a client to compliment the overall design of the project. Here's the description of a rug designed for New England Home magazine's 5 Under 40 award and hand made by Landry & Arcari.

"Like most of our architectural or interior design work, tried to start designing this project from a meaningful source as inspiration. In this case, I felt that using my Persian heritage would be fitting, especially for designing a rug.

My father’s side of the family have deep roots in Esfahan, Iran. A historic city known for its art, architecture, rugs and textiles. In addition, due to its climate, Esfahan is also fertile with farm land comprising mainly of wheat and barley fields.

Using a satellite image of some of these fields, the natural tapestry of geographic land formations seemed to be a perfect starting point to designing this rug. The area is composed of natural growth, farm land, and built structures.

By abstracting these elements, the Esfahan Rug is composed of four distinguishable features: a dotted pattern representing natural vegetation, linear bright silk lines etching the surface as long wheat and barley fields, a grid-like geometry representing man-made structures, and a curved scar that exposes the loom to represent a road that separates the natural landscape."
