EAST VIEW FARM - Cambridge, NY
A Boston-based client, owner of a large parcel of land in upstate New York, engaged our firm to design a new country house for their rural property. The design concept balances refinement with restraint, creating an architecture that is both understated and quietly expressive.
The proposed structure is a simple rectangular volume, crowned by a distinctive roof with generous, deep overhangs that emphasize horizontal lines and provide protection from the elements. Rising from within this form, a vertical tower element extends above the main roofline, creating a loft-like lookout space that offers panoramic views across the landscape. This tower not only serves as a visual anchor but also bisects the roof, allowing the overhang to extend outward and form covered canopies that shelter both the main entry and a secondary door leading to the deck.
The primary living spaces are framed by expansive glazed walls, allowing for uninterrupted views of the surrounding fields and distant Green Mountains of Vermont. These large openings dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior, reinforcing a strong connection to the land while allowing natural light to flood the interior spaces throughout the day.
Together, the home’s clean geometry, thoughtful siting, and careful attention to proportion create a contemporary rural retreat that feels deeply rooted in its landscape, yet inherently modern in its approach.
