A 1960s ranch-style house in Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood has been completely gutted, expanded, and reimagined as a minimalist, modern residence. The client’s appreciation for mid-century modern design significantly influenced the aesthetic direction.
Taking advantage of the property’s natural slope, which descends one story from the front to the rear yard, the design emphasizes a “cascading” effect, linking the main living spaces of the upper floor to the outdoor areas below. From the upper level, a new set of switchback stairs leads down to an elevated deck, which serves as a transitional space before descending further to a ground-level terrace. This terrace, in turn, integrates with several of the lower-level entertainment spaces.
Inside, a custom-built white oak shelving and storage wall serves as a “spine,” extending vertically to connect the two floors. This feature also delineates the public living spaces from the private bedroom areas, providing both functionality and aesthetic cohesion throughout the home.
